Biography
SUREYYA SERDENGECTİ
Born in Istanbul in 1952, Mr.Serdengecti completed his elementary and high school education there, and then earned a BS in Economics from the Middle East Technical University, Ankara in 1979.
Mr.Serdengecti joined the Central Bank of Turkey in 1980 and started to work first at the Foreign Debt Rescheduling Division. He moved on in 1982 to the Foreign Exchange Transactions Division, division responsible for international official reserves management. Meanwhile, he was sent by the Central Bank to the US to study for a master’s degree. He obtained his MA degree in Economics from Vanderbilt University, Nashville, Tennessee in 1986.
Upon his return to the Central Bank, Mr.Serdengecti continued to work at the Foreign Exchange Transactions Division and was appointed Division Director in 1990. He moved to the post of Director at the Open Market Operations Division in 1992 where he served until 1994 when he became Assistant Secretary General and Press Officer of the Bank. The same year, he was assigned as Deputy Executive Director to the Foreign Relations Department, where he supervised balance of payments and international organizations.
In May 1996, Mr.Serdengecti became Executive Director of the Markets Department. In addition to management of international reserves and open market operations, he now was also responsible for currency fixing, interbank foreign exchange and money markets, also Treasury auctions.
Mr.Serdengecti served as the Vice-Governor responsible for markets, credits, data processing and statistics from January 1998 to March 14th 2001, when he was appointed Governor of the Central Bank of Turkey.
His full term as governor ended in March14th 2006.
Since June 2006 Mr.Serdengeçti is a senior lecturer at TOBB Economics and Technology University in Ankara delivering courses in Macroeconomics, Finance, Financial Institutions.
Mr.Serdengecti speaks English and French, is married and father to a son.
