Abstract: Extensive attention has been given to various surface functionalization methods, giving rise to novel applications especially in biosensors during the past decades. Tailoring the surface by patterning with complex organic functional groups such as ligands and binding units for protein recognition is a crucial prerequisite for biosensor device realization, which is achieved by the system of self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) on both metallic and nonmetallic surfaces. This chapter summarizes the fabrication methods of these SAMs and also various applications of biosensors based on both metallic and nonmetallic substrates. Emphasis lies mostly on the biosensor applications in which self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) and interface engineering play a crucial role. © 2018 Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA.
