İmparatorluk Filistin Ortodoks Cemiyeti Ve 1882-1914 Yıllarında Filistin Ve Suriye’de Rus Şarkiyatçılar

Abstract

This article examines the scientific and educational activities of the Imperial Orthodox Palestine Society. established by the Russian Empire in Jerusalem, in 1882. It follows these activities from its foundation up to the outbreak of the First World War by looking at its two periodicals, Palestinskii Sbornik and Soobshcheniia Imperatorskogo Pravoslavnogo Palestinskogo Obshchestva. On the one hand, the article addresses the relationship between scientific, cultural, and educational activities and Russian policy in this region. On the other hand, it discusses the limits of Russian influence in Syria and Palestine on the eve of the First World War. It also deals with the impact of the Russian cultural presence in Syria and Palestine on local politics and ethnic rivalries in this region. In conclusion, the article elaborates what contribution the Society’s scientific and cultural activities and their political outcomes can make on modernday discussions about Orientalism.

Bu makalede, Rusya İmparatorluğu tarafından 1882 yılında Kudüs’te kurulan İmparatorluk Filistin Ortodoks Cemiyeti’nin kuruluşundan Birinci Dünya Savaşı’na kadar olan bilim ve eğitim faaliyetleri, cemiyetin iki süreli yayını olan Palestinskiy Sbornik ve Soobşçeniya İmperatorskogo Pravoslavnogo Palestinskogo Obşçestva üzerinden değerlendirilecektir. Bir yandan bilim, kültür ve eğitim faaliyetlerinin Rusya’nın bu bölgedeki politikasıyla ilişkisi irdelenecek, diğer yandan Birinci Dünya Savaşı öncesinde Rusya’nın Suriye ve Filistin’deki etkisinin sınırları tartışılacaktır. Ayrıca, Rusya’nın Filistin ve Suriye’deki kültürel varlığının bölgedeki yerel siyasete ve etnik gruplar arası rekabete etkisi ele alınacaktır. Sonuç olarak, söz konusu cemiyetin yürüttüğü bilimsel ve kültürel çalışmaların ve bu çalışmaların politik etkilerinin günümüzde Şarkiyatçılık üzerine yapılan tartışmalara ne katabileceği üzerinde durulacaktır.
