Abstract: The green strength of uniaxially compacted preforms is a critical property in the powder metallurgy processes which determines the final mechanical quality of the sintered products. A series of disc-shaped alumina samples were prepared by cold compaction using various pressures. Four different grades of commercially available alumina powders were used. The tensile strength and fracture energy of the samples were determined by diametral compression tests. Effect of granulate size, amount of binder and compaction pressure on the mechanical properties of cold pressed, debinded and sintered samples are discussed. © European Powder Metallurgy Association (EPMA).
