Abstract: Tungsten heavy alloys are widely used in ballistic applications due to their superior mechanical properties. The deformation characteristics of tungsten heavy alloys at high strain rates should be determined to understand the perforation and penetration performances. One of the ways which is commonly used in determining the deformation behavior of the alloys at high strain rates is Taylor impact test. In this work, the dynamic properties and deformation characteristics of 93W-5.6Ni-1.4Fe and 93W-4.67Ni-2.33Fe alloys were investigated by Taylor impact tests with different velocities by using a single stage gas gun. The samples were cold isostatically pressed under 300 MPa and sintered at 1460C and 1480C for 20 minutes under hydrogen and 10 minutes under argon atmosphere. Numerical analyses of Taylor tests were conducted by using Autodyn 3D to compare with the test results. The study showed that, the samples which were sintered at 1480C had more plastic deformation in Taylor impact tests and good agreement in deformation characteristics of test and numerical results of low velocity impact was obtained.
