Although there are concerns about the current structure and the operation of the system in Turkey, too, a new page has been opened in this process along with the Personal Pension Savings and Investment System Law numbered 4632. Expected to support the level of welfare of individuals in the end of their active working lives and help individuals provide a side income, this system also aims to play an active part in the development of capital markets through long term funds, with which it creates personal retirement funds, and contribute to the stability of markets by taking initiative in macro-economic developments.A necessity for a new structure has also emerged in Turkey because of the ill operation of the public social security system, and the Personal Pension System has been launched. For the system to work effectively, all parties are required to work actively. Along with the increase in the number of institutional investors, finance instruments will diversify in the money and capital markets and long term funds will bring a new dimension to markets.Considered from a general perspective, two fundamental management principles appear in the management of pension mutual funds. In spite of the instability of capital markets and the variability of the system?s applicability in the country, these two approaches have a common goal which is to provide the security of the contributions of individuals and ensure that these individual contributions will be in a level as required by individuals in the period of retirement.Master Thesis Yatırım Projelerinin Değerlendirilmesi : Türkiye Elektrik Enerjisi Sektöründe Bir Çalışma(TOBB Ekonomi ve Teknoloji Üniversitesi Sosyal Bilimler Enstitüsü, 2010) Erbaş, Özge; Aktaş, RamazanIn this study, the methods used in the preparation of feasibility studies regarding the investment projects and in the evaluation of the investment projects are explained within the framework of the literature taking into consideration the importance of fixed capital investments both for the business enterprises and for the economy of the country and the feasibility study for an hydroelectricity power plant project with an installed capacity of 76 MW is prepared. There are plenty of explanations of the word brand in marketing literature. Despite the fact that there are more advantages of being a branded product both for producers and customers than being a non-branded product, to create a brand, to maintain as well as to develop brand perception are difficult tasks. A branded product is known for its superior consumer awareness and market share. For this reason, branding is the common way to increase market share and brand promotion. A successful brand is perceived by customers as added value in terms of product or service in a competitive market. In this respect, especially nowadays, a successful brand requires overall endeavors. Today, when a brand is created, the most essential element of brand managements is packaging. Packaging which, in the past, was underestimated has recently played an important role. Lately, producers consider packaging as an indispensable marketing tool; a tool which can effect consumers? purchasing decisions at market shelves. However, effective packaging is not only a marketing tool which can be as effective as advertisement and promotion, but also an invariable piece of valid strategy which increases customers? brand loyalty. Effective packaging has become the most determining factor whether or not a brand is widely known.\tIn this thesis, former studies had been evaluated regarding branding and the importance of packaging on branding. In the second phase, the fast moving consumer goods as well as the main theme of packaging in the chocolate sector were examined carefully. Data compiling method was surveyed in this study. Furthermore, data complied from the survey were analized with SPSS and also useful outcomes were achieved.\tAccording to the outcomes, a successful chocolate brand packaging must be able to protect the product thoroughly. There must be no leakage. Moreover, a successful brand package must contain the product?s expiry date, list of ingredients, manufacturer?s name, together with two important information which has been emphasized nowadays; nutritional values and calorie. Additionally, thanks to the rising environmental sensibility, logos, signs as well as contexts concerning the protection of environment have become the necessary items of packaging designs.\tAs mentioned above, a consumer expects a chocolate package to contain product?s information. Today firms have to pay more attention to the package of their products, as well as other marketing factors such as technology, product variety, or price, in order to keep their business in highly competitive markets. Those firms which pay not enough attention to packaging are doomed to fall one step behind their rivals. Besides, a chocolate package must be eye-catching. In conclusion, apart from other properties of a product, packaging is proved to be one of the most important elements of branding. Keywords: Package, Chocolate, Brand, Brand Equity, Brand Identity.Master Thesis Küçük ve Orta Ölçekli Sanayi İşletmelerinde Verimlilik Sorunlarının Teşhisi : Kısmi Bir Uygulama(TOBB Ekonomi ve Teknoloji Üniversitesi Sosyal Bilimler Enstitüsü, 2010) Demirtaş, Umut; Aktaş, RamazanThis study implements the complementary steps of productivity management; namely productivity measurement and diagnosing productivity problems in a small enterprise. Productivity management is cyclic and includes measuring productivity, diagnosing productivity problems, planning for productivity improvement and implementing the productivity improvement plan as consecutive steps. Sustainable competitiveness of enterprises is considered possible by managing productivity. However, it is difficult to say that SMEs manage productivity, furthermore, productivity, on of the fundamental measures of performance, is considered as important as profitability on their agenda. Productivity ratios are measured in a small sized manufacturing enterprise using RAPMODS (Ramsay Productivity Modelling System) that has advantages such as using existing accounting data, high confidentiality and low cost. Results show that the total and partial measures of productivity increased betweeen 2006-2008 and decreased in 2009. The decrease in 2009 was partially interpreted as an outcome of the volatility in raw material prices and currency and also the slump in demand due to the global financial crisis. Measures that excludes external effects shows the same trend, indicating internal productivity problems. The next step, diagnose studies has shown the importance of principles of a succesful diagnose such as working in different levels of the enterprise, not accepting the enterprise owner?s thoughts as they are and reaching conclusions based on evidence, not prejudices. The diagnose studies show that the enterprise is a production oriented family business and it is on the edge of institutionalization. The problems are defined and analyzed, examples are given on how to solve the problems. Production management is its core competency and the found and analyzed problems are concentrated in the human resources and marketing management. Fisrtly, the enterprise should conduct a reorganization study and enhance the human resources and maketing management functions prefreably by employing professional managers that are not from the family. Secondly, detailed planning can be done by the assigned managers based on the problem analysis in order to solve the problems, and improve productivity.Master Thesis Türkiye Biyoteknoloji Sektöründe Reel Opsiyonlar Yöntemi ile Bir Ar-ge Projesinin Değerlemesi(TOBB Ekonomi ve Teknoloji Üniversitesi Sosyal Bilimler Enstitüsü, 2010) Arslanhan, Selin; Çelikkol Erbaş, BaharNumerous countries have seriously started to rely on high-tech sectors and innovation-oriented growth strategies in order to have sustainable competition power in the race of economic development. Increasing population and changing demand structure recently bring forth the need for innovative applications and thus biotechnology sector has started to expand not only in developed world, but also in developing countries.Development of biotechnology industry has brought about the processes of technology transfers, licensing agreements, mergers and acquisitions, and joint R&D projects. As R&D projects being one of the most important assets of the biotechnology companies, the aforementioned processes necessitate the valuation of the R&D projects.. The traditional and most widely used metod of valuation is Discounted Cash Flow (DCF) method. However, in recent years, the Reel Options method, which was developed to eliminate the deficiencies of DCF method, has been started to be used extensively in valuing R&D projects in biotechnology sector. In valuation process, country and sector specific factors bear importance and so do the studies. However, in the relevant literature there is no studies on the valuation of R&D projects of the biotechnology companies in Turkey. Within its scope, this thesis aims to develop a valuation model for an incompleted real life R&D project of a biotechnology company in Turkey. The study composed of six sections. After the brief introduction section, the definition of biotechnology as well as its use in various sectors, and the contribution of the biotechnology sectors to the economies of the World and Turkey are covered in section two. Section three focuses on the concept of valuation, variety of processes that need valuation, types of valuation methods and the use of valuation in the biotechnology sector. The data, methodology, and computations of model parameters are presented in section four. In section five, the valuation with DCF and Real Options methods are done. The last section includes comparative analysis of results, sensitivity analyses, and overall assessment of the valuation process of a biotechnology firm given the specifics of Turkey.Master Thesis Elektronik Sadakat : Türkiye'de Elektronik Sadakati Etkileyen Faktörler(TOBB Ekonomi ve Teknoloji Üniversitesi Sosyal Bilimler Enstitüsü, 2010) Övgü Okan, Işıl; Tarı, BernaNowadays, in an atmosphere where the number of options increases and accessing those options are getting easier, the process of creation of e-loyalty in the online area contains a lot of interdependent factors. In this way, capital, people, technology and culture has become more fluid. Facilitated communication and movement caused many discussions whether the cultural characteristics of communities affect each other or become more homogenious. There is a reciprocal loop between globalization and international companies which are the head of the factors affecting the globalization. It?s important to enter foreign markets in which the walls were destroyed, not only for firms to gain huge profits, but also for the world to make cultural interactions. While globalization makes the firms more international, international firms make the world more globalized, as well. It?s obvious that firms entering the international foreign markets shape their marketing strategies according to the cultures of societies. Because culture is an important actor in shaping consumer needs and desires. Especially choosing to be supranational strategies when entering foreign markets, provides that firms to become an international cause and opportunity to their products to be international, rather than belonging a nation. The biggest motivating factor of international firms is the feature of culture that it can be taught as well as it can be learned. Set out here, the questions, is there any changes in local consumption cultures have created by these successful companies around the world or which is the definition of concept of globalization in international firms?s dictionary, discussed such as homogenization, hybridization, exchange, affinity in the literature, played an important role initiating this research. In addition, general research are about the effects of foreign firms on the local cultures in the globalization literature but in this research a reverse effect is seen as a space will be aimed to highlight on how and to what extent.Master Thesis Ekonomik İstikrarsızlık Dönemlerinde Kullanılabilecek İpotekli Konut Kredileri(TOBB Ekonomi ve Teknoloji Üniversitesi Sosyal Bilimler Enstitüsü, 2010) Baysal, Beyza; Alp, AliTüm dünyada sürekli artan talebin karşılanamamasından dolayı artış gösteren konut finansman sorunu bu çalışmada incelenmiştir. Credit risk management is very important, because its exposures on large masses can reach irrecoverable sizes.During the evolution of finance world some instruments have been developed for the management of credit risks. The most important instrument is the credit default swap, which is a financial act to transfer issuers or investors credit risk to a third party.Usage of credit risks to obtain arbitrage profit and to engross instead of protection caused a worldwide disturbance. This has an undeniable role in the global financial crisis which started in USA in 2008.In this study, point of exit, causes and results of 2008 global financial crisis are scrutinized. And the debt crisis generated firstly in Greece, then in Ireland and Portugal are examined differentially. The aim of this thesis is to explain the type of credit default swap (active or passive indicator.) For this goal, first of all 5-year CDS spreads and 10-year bond yield of Greece, Ireland, Portugal have been calculated. Than the difference between these countries? (which are in debt crisis) and Germany?s 10-year bond yield is calculated and the consistency of these data are measured by making correlation analysis. And also it is learned which one is active or passive by making multiple regression analysis. On the conclusion of this study, results are examined and some advises are given.Key words: Credit risk, risk management, credit default swap, global financial crises, debt crisis, the relationship of bill of exchange interest rates. Master Thesis Şirket Tahvillerinin Çoklu Diskriminant Analizi, Sıralı Logit ve Sıralı Probit Modelleriyle Derecelendirilmesi(TOBB Ekonomi ve Teknoloji Üniversitesi Sosyal Bilimler Enstitüsü, 2011) Körs, Murat; Aktaş, RamazanThe globalization and liberalization of economies trigger the expansion of the volume of capital markets. Parallel to this developments, the use of corporate bonds, one of the most important tool of capital markets, become widespread. This situationincreasesthe need forbondrating which is an indicator ofquality. Turkey, met with corporate bonds in 1970s, could not provide the development of corporate bond market and consequently development of bond and capital market, due to the crowding out of private sector by the need for higher public borrowing, tax disadvantages and uncertaintybrought byhighinflation. However, the recent downward trend in inflation and interest rates, The CentralBank'soptimisticreports and regulations about taxation has brought the corporate bonds to the agenda again as an alternative finance source.\tThe ratios related with the long-term bond ratings and financial statements of the corporates which are in the sample was analyzed by multiple discriminant analysis, ordered logit and ordered probit analysis techniques. The analyses has two essential points to be emphasized. The first one is to construct models by these three methods which are commonly used in corporate bond rating and thus to contribute to the literature. The second one is to obtain the ratios which result in higher rating grades.\tAccording to the study, operating income, debt ratios and return on equity ratios are found to be the factors which have the biggest impact on corporate bond rating. Comparedwith the results ofthe previousstudies, similar findings are obtained indicating the consistency of findings.Master Thesis Otelcilik Sektöründe Gelir Yönetimi Uygulamaları(TOBB Ekonomi ve Teknoloji Üniversitesi Sosyal Bilimler Enstitüsü, 2012) Tan, Aygül; Meterelliyoz Kuyzu, MelikeNowadays, a great number of enterprises develop mathematical methods to maximize their revenues due to intense competition in the current global business environment. In this context, revenue management is an essential practice used in several industries to maximize the revenue. In hospitality sector, revenue management applications are quite needed for optimum capacity allocation and price decisions. Since there are lots of big international companies developing professional models in global business environment, it is vital to set systematic policies for small local companies. From this point of view, this study determines booking limits and protection levels for a hotel by using real data obtained from a Turkish hotel, and also develops an optimum capacity allocation policy in different demand densities. Expected Marginal Seat Revenue (EMSR-b) which has not been used in previous studies in this area is applied as a modeling technique. In simulation study, occupancy rates of hotel and characteristics of customer reservations are used as inputs. As a result, it is observed that EMSR-b shows best performance at a specific level of demand density, and also it increases total revenue up to that specific level of demand density. After that level, total revenue gradually decreases due to application of EMSR-b method.Master Thesis Tüketici Temelli Destinasyon Marka Değerinin Ölçülmesi : İstanbul Örneği(TOBB Ekonomi ve Teknoloji Üniversitesi Sosyal Bilimler Enstitüsü, 2012) Mutlu, Sibel; Tarı Kasnakoğlu, BernaThe concept of managing countries/cities, places in general, in the same way of managing a brand, is gaining importance with an aim of getting a better share from the world?s scarce resources. Especially in telecommunication sector, the fact that customers frequently switch from one subscription or tariff to another depending upon the extension of the product range and the increase in the number of tariffs requires not only better comprehension of customer demand and behaviour but also better strategies in accordance with this demand and behaviour. From this point of view, this study determines the customer churn among the product groups (telephone, telephone + internet, telephone + internet + television) and tariffs; specifies the major factors that cause the churn and also makes some suggestions by analyzing a telecommunication firm?s data. Discrete choice modelling which has not been used in the previous studies in this area is applied as a modelling technique. In the modelling phase, tariff features (tariff fee); demographic characteristics (level of income, household number, dwelling type) and usage information (call duration, download amount) of customers are used as variables. As a result, level of income and dwelling type of customers; household number and monthly call duration; level of income and monthly download amount; and solely level of income are foreseen as more significant variables in churn among the product groups, telephone tariffs, internet tariffs and television tariffs respectively. According to the choice probabilities, it can be also argued that customers have made the most reasonable selection in the internet tariffs in which are considered that churn rate is minimum (persisting rate in current tariff is maximum).Master Thesis Genetiği Değiştirilmiş Gıdalar ve Risk Algısı: Sonradan Edinilen Pozitif Bilginin Tutuma Etkisi(TOBB Ekonomi ve Teknoloji Üniversitesi Sosyal Bilimler Enstitüsü, 2012) Özgen, Tuğçe; Tarı Kasnakoğlu, BernaHealth related potential losses have become one of the most important factors affecting consumers? food choices with the recent food scares and food safety has become primary competitive asset. Due to the factors such as strangeness, the limited level of information, uncertainty and intervention to nature, genetically modified food has become one of the products in which higher physical risk is perceived. While the arguments are continuing around the benefits and risks of these products, it is the fact that the majority of consumers are exposed to negative information focusing on the risks. This study, based on this fact, investigates the effect of positive information on consumer attitude. The participants were examined into three groups according to information processing strategies they apply which determines the type of risk perception. It was investigated whether the change in attitude towards GM food is significant or not after positive information in two different contents which are daily/popular and scientific. The attitude of participants, who process the information heuristically and perceive the risk as feelings, has been changed positively after both type of information. Positive change in the attitude of participants who process the information systematically and perceive analytic risk was observed only after scientific information. The participants, who process the information systematically but evaluate the issue from the political point of view, were analyzed under the group of politic risk. While no changes were expected in the attitude of the group after the both type of information, scientific knowledge lead to positive change.
