An alternative of covered interest arbitrage is uncovered interest arbitrage (UIA) in which investors choose to remain uncovered accepting the currency risk. The "yen carry trade" is known as a longstanding application of UIA. Owing to Japanese low interest rates, yen carry trade has been a highly profitable strategy which involves borrowing in yen to buy higher yielding assets. Employing multivariate GARCH modeling, we examine the volatility transmission mechanism between the exchange rates involved in "yen carry trade". Due to high impact of Lehman Brothers' collapse on world financial markets, we rather do the analysis for both before and after the default. Results reveal that interactions between the exchange rates increase considerably in response to negative market shocks. Our findings present new cross-hedging opportunities for investors.Article Citation - Scopus: 73Analyzing Conversion Rates in Online Hotel Booking: the Role of Customer Reviews, Recommendations and Rank Order in Search Listings(Emerald Group Publishing Ltd., 2016-02) Cezar, Asunur; Öğüt, HulisiPurpose – The aim of this paper is to examine the impact of three main technologies on converting browsers into customers: impact of review rating (location rating and service rating), recommendation and search listings. Design/methodology/approach – This paper estimates conversion rate model parameters using a quasi-likelihood method with the Bernoulli log-likelihood function and parametric regression model based on the beta distribution. Findings – The results show that a high rank in search listings, a high number of recommendations and location rating have a significant and positive impact on conversion rates. However, service rating and star rating do not have a significant effect on conversion rate. Furthermore, room price and hotel size are negatively associated with conversion rate. It was also found that a high rank in search listings, a high number of recommendations and location rating increase online hotel bookings. Furthermore, it was found that a high number of recommendations increase the conversion rate of hotels with low ranks. Practical implications – The findings show that hotels’ location ratings are more important than both star and service ratings for the conversion of visitors into customers. Thus, hotels that are located in convenient locations can charge higher prices. The results may also help entrepreneurs who are planning to open new hotels to forecast the conversion rates and demand for specific locations. It was found that a high number of recommendations help to increase the conversion rate of hotels with low ranks. This result suggests that a high numbers of recommendations mitigate the adverse effect of a low rank in search listings on the conversion rate. Originality/value – This paper contributes to the understanding of the drivers of conversion rates in online channels for the successful implementation of hotel marketing. © 2016, Emerald Group Publishing Limited.Article Citation - Scopus: 43Antecedents and Consequences of Co-Creation in Credence-Based Service Contexts(Routledge Journals, Taylor & Francıs Ltd, 2016) Tarı Kasnakoğlu, BernaThe present study proposes that co-creation is a dialogical process which involves a high level of participation by both partners, and attempts to test a co-creation model, where partners engage in a service interaction using their operant resources. Results from 65 exploratory interviews and 502 scenario-based experiments demonstrate that operant resources lead to higher levels of participation; however, participation by one partner does not lead to co-creation unless the other partner is also participating, indicating the constructive effects of a mutually contributing relationship. Results also imply that co-creation is a highly contextual and interactive phenomenon, thus the dimensions and the effects of mutual participation should be interpreted by investigating specific service contexts. Positive outcomes significantly increase with co-creation; however, well-being seems to be a concept intertwined within the dyadic service relationship rather than a remote state of the consumer.Book Part Araştırma ve Yayın Etiği(Nobel Tıp Kitabevleri, 2023) Tarı Kasnakoğlu, Berna[No Abstract Available]Article Assessing the Impact of Terrorist Attacks on Sovereign Risk Perception: Evidence from Turkey's CDS Market(Prague Univ Economics And Business, 2024) Demirhan, Ecem; Tokat, Ekin; Tokat, Hakki ArdaThis study investigates the impact of terrorism on financial markets, focusing specifically on Turkey's sovereign Credit Default Swap (CDS) premiums from 2011 to 2017 - period characterized by frequent and diverse terrorist activities. Employing an EGARCH model with dummy variables for various terrorist groups, we analyze immediate and short-term market reactions across different event windows. Our findings reveal significant volatility in CDS premiums following terrorist incidents, with market responses varying depending on the terrorist group perpetrating the incident. This study enhances the understanding of capital market reactions on terrorist events through CDS instruments, highlighting their role in assessing sovereign credit and country risk.Article Citation - Scopus: 9An Asymmetric Configural Model Approach for Understanding Complainer Emotions and Loyalty(Elsevier Science Inc, 2016) Tarı Kasnakoğlu, Berna; Yılmaz, Cengiz; Varnalı, KaanFew works emphasize the emotional nature of customer complaint behavior, and those that do so fodis largely on negativity. The idea that specific emotions might lead to idiosyncratic reactions and that in some cases positive emotions may also-be aroused during the complaint experience has been largely neglected. The study explores this issue by identifying specific emotions experienced by complainers and then relating them to resulting complainer loyalty levels, separately under conditions where the outcomes of the complaint process is evaluated favorably versus unfavorably. Complaint texts posted on a well-known website are content analyzed and six types of emotions (hopeful, puzzled, recessive, befooled, offended, and hypersensitive), three types of texting styles (general, specific, and threatening), and five types of complainer concerns (financial, technical, psychological, social, and physical) are identified via content analyses. Configural analyses reveal 33 combination paths of these antecedent conditions for complainer loyalty and 65 different combinations for disloyalty. Results suggest that the specific emotions approach potentially explains more about complaining customer behavior compared to the more general valence-based approach, and that post-complaint loyalty depends considerably on complainer emotions, concerns, and texting styles experienced and expressed during the complaint process. In order to account for the time variation in volatility, we adapted a GARCH option pricing model which extends the seminal structural approach of default by Merton (J Finance 29(2):449, 1974) and calculated "distance to default" indicators that respond to heightened market developments. With its richer volatility dynamics, our results better reflect higher expected default probabilities precipitated by the GFC. The diagnostics show that the model generally outperforms standard models of default and offers relatively good indicators in assessing bank failures.Article Bir Performans Değerlendirme Yöntemi Olarak Uyum Yüzeyi Kuramı: Bankacılık Örneği(2012) Şimşek, Eray Kağan; İlter, H. In this regard, it is examined in details at which point the ownership of the shares and share ownership rights are transferred to the transferee after the shares are traded at the stock exchange as well as process for shareowners to attend the general meeting and to exercise their voting rights in the light of electronic general meeting and the state of the shares that are dematerialized and registered in the books of Central Registry Agency (MKK). It is also explained that although removing share blockage is a big step for exercising rights such as attending the general meeting and voting, present practice is not flawless at all. Main problems are the risk of shareowner list provided to the issuers being outdated since the records are kept by MKK members; the fact that some shareowners can’t attend the general meeting despite the removal of share blockage while the possibility of unauthorized persons to attend the general meeting. Suggested solutions to the said problems are also stated in this article.Article Citation - Scopus: 2Budget Impact of Incorporating Non-Invasive Prenatal Testing in Prenatal Screening for Down Syndrome in Turkey(Elsevier Ltd., 2019-12) Ökem, Zeynep Güldem; Örgül, Gökçen; Tarı Kasnakoğlu, Berna; Çakar, Mehmet; Beksaç, Mehmet SinanObjectives: To provide information to the government about the budget impact of implementing non-invasive prenatal testing (NIPT) into prenatal screening strategies to detect Down syndrome (DS) in singleton pregnancies in Turkey; the likely costs or savings associated with NIPT in comparison to the current practice were calculated. Methods: A decision-analytic model was developed to calculate the cost estimates for 1,309,771 women who gave birth in 2016; 84.8% of whom were <35-years-of-age. The superior combined test (CT) among current strategies is compared with contingent NIPT for women < 35-years-of-age; and usual practice of amniocentesis (AC) for women ? 35 years-of-age was replaced with universal NIPT. Results: When the market price of NIPT (1,077 PPPUS$) is used, contingent NIPT offered to high-risk women < 35-years-of-age adds 34,907,225 PPPUS$; and for women-35 ? years-of-age the universal NIPT leads to 142,785,818 PPPUS$ more cost to the government compared to current strategies. The additional costs with NIPT are partially compensated by the cost-savings due to reduction of the number of invasive tests and procedure related losses (17,826,476 PPPUS$ for women < 35-years-of-age and 37,070 PPPUS$ for women ? 35-years-of-age). Results are sensitive to the NIPT costs; with a lower cost of NIPT, a total saving would be 33,116,046 PPPUS$ with new strategies. Conclusions: NIPT might be the choice of prenatal screening strategies if its price is lowered to economically acceptable levels. Until that time, currently accepted protocols seem to be more realistic. On the other hand, decision makers should also consider possible savings and the women's quality of life that can be improved with the new technology.Article Citation - Scopus: 32Co-Creating Positive Outcomes in Higher Education: Are Students Ready for Co-Creation?(Routledge Journals, Taylor & Francis Ltd, 2022) Tarı Kasnakoğlu, Berna; Mercan, HandeStudent engagement has been extensively studied from 'student as co-producer' and 'student as customer' perspectives, while co-creation may provide a renewed framework aiming for an extended and more useful relationship between students and instructors through dyadic interactions. With the intention of theorizing co-creation in a more comprehensive model, the present study incorporates 'operant resources' as antecedents to the formation of a co-creative relationship. The model also proposes that co-creation is a mediator between resources and outcomes. Lastly, the strength of the bond between students and instructors moderates this relationship. Based on fifteen in-depth interviews, the higher education context is reflected more accurately. The qualitative findings are used to construct a questionnaire, which is then administered among 172 students at two different times to capture the evolving student-educator bond. Results support our proposed model and a discussion is made on co-creation as a methodical process in an ecosystem entangling various stakeholders.Conference Object Citation - Scopus: 1Competitive Mobile Marketing and Its Impact on the Mobile Eco System(Association for Information Systems, 2016) Cezar, Asunur; Raghunathan, ŞrinivaşanTargeting mobile consumers is similar to traditional targeting which focuses on stationary consumers in the sense both exploit data about consumers to tailor the marketing strategy. However, factors related to mobility such as travel direction or destination play an important role in a mobile consumer's evaluation of competing products. This paper focuses on consumer targeting using such mobile data. We seek to answer the following research questions in the above context using a game theoretic model: (i) How are the price competition between sellers, seller profits, consumer surplus, and social welfare affected when one or both sellers acquire the information, and (ii) What are the sellers' incentives to acquire the information? We do the analysis for the cases when the information includes only consumer location and when it includes both location and travel direction. We find that the ratio of unit time cost to unit transportation cost, which we refer to as the propensity for instant gratification, and the type of information offered by the app - location only or location and direction - shape the competition between sellers and their incentives to acquire the information. The findings have significant implications for the players in the mobile eco system.Article Citation - Scopus: 3Concept Mapping Sustainable Energy Management for a Holistic Approach To Energy Strategies(Inderscience Enterprises Ltd, 2016) Söğüt, M. Ziya; Uysal, Murat Paşa; Gazibey, Yavuz; Hepbaşlı, ArifOne of the important reasons for global warming and climate change is regarded as the improper management of fossil energy consumption. There may be various models or approaches to energy management (EM). However, strategic EM and its applications are still away from achieving their goals. In this regard, the main objectives of the present study are to design, develop and propose a knowledge framework primarily based on an EM concept map for a holistic EM. Aligned with the research purposes, a qualitative four-phase study was conducted, and the research question was formulated as: 'What would be the components and concepts required for the holistic EM?' The study also integrated systematic literature review (SLR) and focus group discussion (FGD) techniques. Initially, a list of the key EM concepts was formed and a preliminary concept map was constructed. Then, the final version of the concept map was achieved through several iterative revisions and FGDs. This concept map may be seen as a complementary and contributory tool for strategy development and decision-making processes in the EM knowledge domain. It is hoped that the study may extend the previous knowledge both by the tools it has utilised and approaches it has adopted for the holistic EMArticle Citation - Scopus: 3Concerns of Pregnant Women in Prenatal Screening/Diagnosis Practice and Termination of Pregnancy(Georg Thieme Verlag, 2020-06) Tarı Kasnakoğlu, Berna; Çakar, Mehmet; Ökem, Zeynep Güldem; Tanacan, Atakan; Fadıloğlu, Erdem; Örgül, Gökçen; Beksaç, Mehmet SinanObjective To investigate the reasons for decision-making and concerns of patients in the field of prenatal screening, invasive prenatal diagnostic testing (IPDT), and termination of pregnancy (TOP). Study Design This questionnaire-based study consisted of 107 pregnant women who were referred for prenatal screening to the Hacettepe University Hospital. The questionnaire given to patients was prepared from scratch since there is no standard set of questions measuring patients' feelings and concerns regarding prenatal screening/diagnosis, IPDT, and TOP. Results Our questionnaire results showed that it is possible to classify decision-making factors into 6 groups: psychological, social, fear, religious/faith, support, and trust. The majority of patients were undecided (48.6%) about IPDT if prenatal screening test results were risky. Only 23.4% of patients were willing to accept IPDT. On the other hand, 55.1% of patients were not willing to undergo TOP if the fetal karyotyping results were abnormal. Religious factors seem to be important in refusing IPDT and TOP. Conclusion Physicians should re-evaluate their practice in the field of prenatal screening and diagnosis in light of the high refusal rates of IPDT and TOP. Understanding factors influencing women's decision-making processes provides insight for service providers to help women at high risk of having foetal anomalies to make better-informed choices.Article Citation - Scopus: 7The Configuration and Detection Strategies for Information Security Systems(2013-05) Öğüt, HulisiIntrusion Detection Systems (IDSs) have become an important element of the Information Technology (IT) security architecture by identifying intrusions from both insiders and outsiders. However, security experts questioned the effectiveness of IDSs recently. The criticism known as Base Rate fallacy states that when IDS raises an alarm, the event is more likely to be benign rather than intrusive since the proportion of benign activity is significantly larger than that of intrusive activity in the user population. In response to too many false alarms, system security officers (SSO) either ignore alarm signals or turn off the IDS as the information provided by IDS is very skeptical. To alleviate this problem of IDSs, Ogut et al. (2008) [6] suggest that the firm may choose to wait to get additional signal and to make better decision about user type. One of the limitations of their model is that configuration point at which IDSs operate (the false negative and false positive rates) is exogenously given. However, the firm trying to minimize expected cost should also make a decision regarding the configuration level of IDSs since these probabilities are one of the determinants of future cost. Therefore, we extend Ogut et al. (2008) [6] by considering configuration and waiting time decisions jointly in this paper. We formulate the problem as dynamic programming model and illustrate the solution procedure for waiting time and configuration decision under optimal policy when cost of undetected hacker activity follows step wise function. As it is difficult to obtain waiting time and configuration decision under optimal policy, we illustrate the solution procedures for under myopic policy and focus on the characteristics of configuration decision under myopic policy. Our numerical analysis suggested that configuration decision is as important as waiting time decision to decrease the cost of operating IDS. © 2012 Elsevier Ltd. In this paper, we consider both configuration and waiting time decision in order to design appropriate policies for responding signals generated by IDS. We analyze both myopic configuration policy that minimizes the expected cost in current period and optimal configuration policy that considers expected cost in the current and future periods. These policies are compared with myopic and optimal waiting time policies with fixed configuration. Our results show that myopic configuration and optimal configuration policies reduce cost significantly.Article Citation - Scopus: 10The Construal of Workplace Incivility in Honor Cultures: Evidence From Turkey(Sage Publications Inc, 2019) Wasti, S. Arzu; Erdaş, K. DuyguMost research on workplace incivility has been conducted in the United States, where the cultural logic of dignity prescribes that individuals' worthiness be determined in reference to self-set standards. This inductive study explores the construal of workplace incivility in a contrasting cultural logic of honor, where an individual's worth is largely dependent on the esteem of others. In particular, it seeks to understand how the logic of honor may influence which behaviors are labeled as incivility and which criteria are used to appraise uncivil behaviors in the Turkish context. In the first phase of the study, we asked 53 Turkish employees for examples of workplace incivility behaviors and generated 32 incivility episodes. In the second and third phases, using data from 35 business students and 106 Turkish employees, we analyzed these episodes using multidimensional scaling technique. The results suggested that workplace incivility may have both universal and culturally salient manifestations, and that Turkish respondents appraised uncivil behaviors along three dimensions: honor threatening versus ordinary, excluding versus intruding, inoffensive versus offensive. We further observed that Turkish participants differentiated the power of the instigator (supervisor vs. coworker) as well as the omission of versus commission of behaviors. We discuss the results with a focus on understanding how the honor logic may manifest itself in professional relationships.Article Consumer Socialization Of Children In Low-Income Families(International Scientific Publications, 2023) Bilici, Gülcan Bengisu; Tarı Kasnakoğlu, Berna; Türe, MeltemThis study investigates whether and how children’s and their mother’s proneness to consumption would affect children’s liking for shopping in low-income families. The expectation is that children would be directly affected from their mothers’ orientation towards consumption and shopping. A survey was employed in low-income households to 126 children attending primary school and their mothers. Results imply that mothers play a direct role in shaping children’s orientation towards consumption. More specifically, children’s own consumption orientation would increase their liking for shopping. Mothers’ proneness to consumption, however, directly mediates this relationship. These results are discussed along with theoretical and practical implications.Article Consumers' Risk Reduction Strategies(Bilgesel Yayincilik San & Tic Ltd, 2013) Tarı Kasnakoğlu, BernaThe aim of this study is to examine the relationship between risk type, categorical involvement, and risk reduction strategies within a comprehensive framework. The study is composed of two stages. Final results, obtained from questionnaire data, reveal that categorically involved consumers engage in more personal risk reduction strategies, usually at the point of sale, and become more loyal consumers. It is also discussed that psychological and social risk types are the ones which consumers feel a greater pressure to decrease the perceived risk, and that different risk types necessitate different risk reduction strategies. It is concluded that this study might contribute to the existing literature on the grounds that it brings different constructs together in the same framework; investigate the effects of categorical involvement; and provide important solutions to marketing managers regarding risk reduction strategies for different risk types.
