Abstract: Fosil yakıtların hızlı ve sürekli tükenmesinden dolayı bilim insanları araştırmalarını yenilenebilir enerji kaynaklarına odaklamıştır.
Because of the rapid and continuous depletion of fossil fuels, researchers have focused on sustainable and renewable alternatives. Renewable energy sources (solar, wind, etc.) have zero emissions, so they have a great deal of control over global warming. On the other hand, solar and wind energies are causing fluctuations during production, leading to network instability and low reliability problems. The preferred method to overcome such problems is to store the energy in the situation where the excess energy is generated, so that the energy source is fed to the network even when the energy demand is the most intense. In this point, the efficiency and cost of storage systems are very important. Flow cells, one of the storage systems, is a good alternative in this regard. Vanadium redox flow batteries are more advantageous than other flow battery systems due to their long life and high energy efficiency. The most important problems preventing the widespread use of this system are the high cost of Nafion (TM) membranes separating the fuels from each other and vanadium electrolytes used as fuel. Directly sulfonated poly (arylene ether benzonitrile) membranes have been tested in our work to overcome these problems and achieve better performance. It has been observed that the yields obtained from the testing of these membranes are much better than those of the vanadium flow batteries in which the Nafion (TM) membranes are used. In this thesis, critical parameters of membranes such as water uptake, proton conductivity, ion exchange capacity (IEC), vanadium permeability and selectivity have been tested for better tailoring the vanadium redox flow battery performance.
