Abstract
We present the optical investigation of crescent-shaped dielectric pillars that comprise a periodic structure named as crescent photonic crystals (CPC). The circular symmetry of individual cells of periodic dielectric structures is broken by replacing them with crescent shapes. The degree of freedom to manipulate the light propagation occurs due to the rotational sensitivity of CPC. The anisotropic equi-frequency contours allow sending light beams along any certain direction which is independent of the lattice periodicity of regular photonic crystals.
