Engineer in formation, he had the master degree in the Istanbul University- International Relationship Faculty in 2000, with his MA thesis Ittihat Terakkinin Müslümanlari Iskan Politikasi 1913-18, published in 2002. His dissertation, defended at the Ecole des Hautes Etudes des Sciences Sociales (EHESS) in Paris. He has been in more than ten Turkish, French, American, German universities for his academic activities, by mainly focusing on the historical demography and nationalism in the Ottoman Empire and post-ottoman space.
